Trump says he trusts Putin not to ‘violate his word’ on Ukraine

CNN’s Erin Burnett reports on President Donald Trump’s comments that he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin will not “violate his word” on Ukraine.

Trump also appeared to shift his tone from recent days on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a meeting and a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House.

In a recent press conference alongside UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, President Donald Trump expressed confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s commitment to peace in Ukraine. Trump stated, “I believe he wants peace,” and emphasized his trust in Putin to uphold any agreements made.

The leaders discussed a potential trade deal that would exempt the UK from American tariffs, aiming to strengthen economic ties between the two nations. Trump praised Starmer’s negotiation skills, suggesting a swift conclusion to the deal.

Despite Starmer’s calls for concrete security guarantees for Ukraine, Trump declined to offer direct U.S. military support. Instead, he proposed an agreement focusing on the exploitation of Ukraine’s natural resources, including oil and gas, as a deterrent against further aggression.

Trump’s approach has raised concerns among European allies, who fear being sidelined in the peace negotiations.
